There are many aspects to resolution, but to make it understandable for everyone we are going to keep it as simple as possible.Security camera resolution is a way to measure the size of the picture a camera can produce, cameras with lower resolution can make smaller images which ends up making low resolution video, and some others can make HD or high definition video. It really is that simple, the larger the image being recorded, the higher the resolution and quality.
Resolution is measured in two different ways, TV lines (analog technologies) and pixels are (digital technologies or IP systems). Analog cameras (CCTV) are rated by horizontal TV lines. HD or digital cameras are rated in pixels as the image below indicates.
CCTV (analog systems) have been around for decades. Recently new technologies (HD-CVI, AHD & IP) have gave a new shine to the image quality problems of the old CCTV technology. Digital HD 720p, 1080p, 2k(4MP), 4K and 8K(16MP) systems are now easily available in the market at a very affordable price.
What is the difference between 720p, 1080p, 4 MP & 4k?
The answer is the amount of pixels available in a single image, or the size of the video. for example, 1080p produces a larger image than 720p, but if you view video of a 720p and a 1080p camera side by side on wide screen HD monitors, it’s likely you cannot tell the difference between the two. Why would this be the case? It is because both cameras meet the minimum resolution requirements of the monitors. The video looks identical, both providing crystal clear vivid HD video. The main reason you would choose to go with higher resolution cameras is because the larger image allows you to digitally zoom into the video without the image pixelates. This can be extremely helpful if you are trying to capture a license plate image or facial recognition at a distance.
But also it is needed to be considered the higher the resolution is it captures bigger space of your hard disk to keep the footage and it may uses more internet bandwidth to transfer the video when you are watching your cameras remotely, how ever this is not something that should worries you at all, as the needs of higher resolution grows engineers are working on better encryption codes to give a better compression on the files. and also you can calculate and set the resolution of stream for remote view on lower if your internet connection is not as good.
